The Maritime Market is located on beautiful Bald Head Island, NC - an island accessible only by passenger ferry where automobiles are prohibited, and the standard mode of transportation is via golf cart or bicycle.   The island is primarily a resort/second home haven, and features world class golf, tennis, croquet, and water sports, along with in-shore and off-shore fishing and over 10 miles of private beaches.  The Market is the island’s only full-service grocery store, and the enterprise is multi-faceted and includes additional branded outlets such as Sweet Bay Café, Sweet Bay Catering, Nye’s Cream Scoops, Copper’s Wood-Fired Kitchen, Side Wok Asian kitchen, and two apparel brands - Bald Head Blues and Coastal Urge.   The enterprise employs over 80 staff during the high season (June-August), and retains about 40 full-time year-round staff.

Sous Chef

Job Description

The Maritime Market is seeking an experienced and creative Sous-Chef with the initiative and work ethic to support our culinary efforts both in-store, and in our Catering operation. The successful candidate will be a well trained and experienced chef that is dependable, adaptive, and a hard-working team player. The Sous-Chef’s focus will be on producing healthy and delicious made-from-scratch cuisines, as well as providing world class customer service to patrons. A current Serve-Safe certificate a plus. You will report directly to the Head Chef, and you’ll be maintaining our day-to-day operations, keeping a clean kitchen, ensuring product quality, and working occasional evenings at our catered events.

 

Essential Functions

  • Prepare all the food items as directed in a sanitary and timely manner.

  • Follow recipes, control portion size, and presentation specifications as set by the Head Chef.

  • Following proper plate presentation and garnish set up for all dishes.

  • Track and report any food waste.

  • Handle, store, and rotate all the products properly.

  • Prepare dishes for customers with food allergies or intolerances.

  • Complete assigned tasks such as putting up stock from vendors, inventory count, additional cleaning, or maintenance of items in the kitchen.

  • Understand orders and basic culinary skills while working swiftly and efficiently.

  • Work well under emergency situations and in a group setting.

  • Responsible for performing other duties as assigned by the Head Chef or General Manager of the Market.

Stocker

Description

Under general supervision, maintain stock levels and overall cleanliness of the Maritime Market.  Report to the Lead Stocker and/or Grocery Manager.  Experience not necessary as on-site training will be provided.  Must have a pleasant personality, be a hard worker, and a team player.

 

Essential Functions

  • Unload merchandise from trucks and pallets, stock shelves in store, and organize merchandise as back stock in the backroom areas.

  • Perform basic janitorial functions in and around the store, i.e., sweep, clean/sanitize bathrooms, empty trash cans and keep store entrance areas clean of all trash as needed.

  • Assist customers with special requests and/or help them load purchased material into their cart.

  • A friendly and helpful attitude is a must.

 

Ancillary Functions

  • Answer telephones and respond to inquiries.

  • Fill in for other personnel in their absence.

  • Handle ordering as directed the by Grocery Manager and/or Lead Stocker.

  • Perform other related work as required by supervisor. i.e. washing dishes, helping in the kitchen, etc.

 

Special Requirements

Requires the ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects.  Requires walking or standing to a significant degree.

Deli/Café Server

Job Description

Under general supervision, prepare and serve a variety of food items for sale, i.e. meats, cheeses, salads, sandwiches, soups, pizza.  Reports to the Cafe Manager.

 

Essential Functions

  • Prepare routine food items for breakfast and lunch for our Café.

  • Prepare food items on demand according to customer specifications.

  • Slice meat and cheese, prepare deli trays, and package salads.

  • Bake bread, cookies, muffins, and other baked goods.

  • Properly merchandise deli, cheese, and bread cases.

  • Maintain deli and food dispensing equipment to ensure a sanitary condition and good working order.  Stay in stock of all supply items.

  • Conform to all county health laws and regulations and keep an “A” rating.

  • Stock deli items and condiments

  • Ensure customers have a pleasant experience during check-out.

  • If over the age of 18, must sell and pour beer when ordered by customers.

  • Assist with catering event preparation as needed.

  • Assist in the Pizza Kitchen and Asian Kitchen when needed.

 

Ancillary Functions

  • Operate cash register, bag food and other purchases and respond to customer inquiries.

  • Perform other related work as required.

Requirements

Requires the ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.  Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for sedentary work. This type of work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree.

Must be 18+ to serve alcoholic beverages. If under 18, you may still work but are unable to fulfill alcoholic beverage orders.
