Tuesday Specials at the Maritime Market - 5/16

Good morning Fellow Islanders!

It's 71 degrees on the front porch this morning, and the dawn is breaking
earlier & earlier each day as we creep toward the summer solstice. The
chorus of birds has now been joined by a few cicadas & crickets for the
morning songs. The winds are light, the seas are calm, and the surf is
quiet. Our week of perfect spring weather continues today, with sunny
skies, light southwesterly breezes, and temperatures in the upper 70's.
Ditto for tomorrow & through the weekend, with temperatures inching up
toward the 80's, and no rain in the forecast. Low tide is now upon us.
High tide will peak around 11:45 this morning, and low tide returns at
about 5:30 this afternoon.

For Breakfast this morning, Chef Marc is preparing a decadent Italian
omelette with pancetta, goat cheese & sun-dried tomatoes for just $7.95.
For lunch today, Marc is featuring a hearty shrimp ravioli plate with a
slice of hot buttered garlic bread for only $9.95. Tuesday's hot bar theme
is "Italian"! You can also order all of the regular menu items
at [1]w[2], and those items will be ready by the time
you arrive.

If you're a fan of big Napa reds (cabernet or cab-based Bordeaux style
blends), then you're going to go nuts over our next wine deal. Our daily
subscribers are getting first dibs once again (the weekly folks will get
their chance tomorrow - if any is still available :), and Kudos to Kevin
for once again chasing down and turning the screws on our distributor for
this one. If you're familiar with Duckhorn wines, you'll know about their
flagship Napa Valley cabs, along with their entry-level wines under their
Decoy label. They also make a terrific Bordeaux blend under the "Paraduxx"
label - it's one that we don't often have, but when we do, it's priced in
the mid $40 range. The 2014 Paraduxx red blend just achieved an
astonishing 93 point rating from James Suckling. If you don't recognize
the name, James was the lead wine critic at Wine Spectator magazine since
1982, and his beat was Bordeaux, Napa, and Italy. He left the magazine a
few years ago and started his own subscription-based rating service, and I
trust his ratings equally to Robert Parker's. The lowest price in the USA
is $36.99 (at Binnie's Beverage Depot in Skokie, IL), but for a very
limited time, you can add this one to your island stash for only
$33.29/btl. and if you purchase a full case, you'll save an extra 10%,
which brings the bottle price below $30 ($29.96 to be exact :). The wine
is in the Market now, so if you're on the island, just drop by. Otherwise,
reply to this email with your phone number and I'll have Kevin call you for
a CC number - we'll hold the wine for you until you return to the island.

The Friends of Music's annual Gala Cruise is all booked, with a waiting
list in the dozens now. The cruise gets underway this coming Saturday, May
20, and departing the marina at 5pm, with music by Mark Daffer & Mike
O'Donnell. There is no cost to attend (thanks to the generosity of many
donors & sponsors of the Friends of Music), but you're asked to bring your
favorite bottle of wine to share (bring the good stuff :) If you'd like
your name added to the waiting list, please contact Jeff Hobbs via email at

The Bald Head island Fishing Rodeo returns this weekend, May 18-20, and
it's not too late to sign up. The Rodeo is a deep sea fishing event, and
boats will be heading out to the gulf stream (about 60 miles out) looking
for Mahi, wahoo, tuna, sailfish, and blue marlin. I've fished in the rodeo
several times and if you've never been deep sea fishing, it's a load of
fun. Prizes are substantial, and the multi-day tourney begins and ends at
the BHI Marina. You'll need a sea-worthy boat, and charters & captains are
available through many sources. For more information, please contact John
Munroe at 471-4005 or visit [4]

On Saturday, May 27 (Memorial Weekend), the Market will host another
edition of our famous Nye's Cream Sandwich eating contest :) There are
only two age groups, and each group is limited to 25 attendees, so if you,
or someone you know would like to enter, you must [5]register on-line and
agree to the rules. The fun begins promptly at 3pm at the new Forest
Pavilion, so be sure to arrive early enough to properly check in.
Spectators are welcome!

The next BHI Artisans Show & Sale takes place on Saturday, may 27 from 10am
- 5pm at the Village Hall. Admission is free and open to the public, and
features hand-made artisan crafts by fellow islanders. For more

The Shoals Club is hosting their Memorial Weekend Coastal Feast Party on
Saturday, May 27, from 6-10pm, with live music by Port City Shakedown, and
seafood stations scattered across the entire Club property. You'll enjoy
everything from grilled oysters, shrimp & grits (with local goat cheese),
roasted pork shoulder, gumbo, seviche, shrimp satays, crab claws, ahi tuna,
and so much more. It's a great kick-off to the summer season, and
reservations are required. Adults are $60 plus tax & 20% gratuity, young
adults (13-20) are $35++, children 12 & under are $20++, and under 5 are
free. Call the Shoals Club at 910-454-4850.

The Market's next "Side Porch Steamer" event takes place over Memorial
Weekend! We'll gather at 5pm on the Forest Pavilion on Sunday evening, May
28, and registration is filling up fast. Seats are still available, but
we'll likely sell out beforehand (we always do) so [8]register now. If
you've never been to one of our side porch events, you don't know what
you're missing :) For this event, we'll be steaming up a mess of mussels
and littleneck clams, served with two delicate & delicious broths, with
crusty bread, along with steamed old bay shrimp, barbecued chicken, and a
load of your favorite sides. Mark Daffer will be returning to serenade the
crowd, and we'll light up the tiki torches & fire pits as well :) Adults
are only $29.95 plus tax/gratuity, and children under 12 are only $14.95
plus tax/gratuity. We'll also have beer & wine available by the glass, or
you can step inside the Market and grab your own bottle or six-pack.

The Pirates are returning to Bald Head Island!! The Pirate Invasion takes
place the weekend of June 23-25, and the weekend is sponsored by many of
the island's businesses and homeowners, and coordinated by BHI Pirate
Invasion, Inc - an organization formed by Sandy Kades to faciliate bringing
the Pirates back to the island. For those who recall the Pirate invasions
of the past, this weekend will be very familiar, with a sea battle, sword
fights, ghost walks, a pancake breakfast, and special interactive and
educational events all weekend. Sandy is in need of volunteers to help
orchestrate the weekend and to help house the pirates! Also, donations are
greatly appreciated to help off-set the costs of travel & housing. Please
reach out to Sandy at
