Sunday Specials at the Maritime Market - 10/22

Good morning Fellow Islanders! It's 72 degrees on the front porch this morning, with a majestic and brilliant sunrise taking place, reflecting hues of red, orange, & purple by a partly cloudy morning sky, along with a slight breeze and a quiet surf. I'm getting a late start this morning - due not to island shenannegans but rather to a body worn down from four days of incredible golf at the BHI Member-Guest. Kevin and I were the beneficiaries of the "blind squirrel" phenomenon - we managed to win our flight (the fifth flight), and then somehow found a way to survive the Championship shootout (with much assistance from our opponents), and won the tourney on the second playoff hole. It was a surreal experience, and puncuated by seeing the ear-to-ear grin on Kevin's face. I'm so proud of him, and he carried my dead weight for so many holes. The game of golf "reveals character", and Kevin's character and humility were on full display - as it is every day at the Market (he's our General Manager for those who don't know), and it was a privilege to have him join me in the tournament for the second time. We'll be back again next year, God willing, to defend our title. Congratulations to all of the flight winners, and kudos to Justin and the entire golf staff (and the culinary staff at the Club) for putting on a superb event - and ordering up the perfect weather. Today we'll see mostly sunny skies, with light easterly breezes and a high in the upper 70's. We'll cool to the upper 60's overnight, and warm to the mid 70's tomorrow, as clouds begin rolling in and hopefully bringing some liquid nourishment to our parched island paradise. Unsettled weather will persist through Tuesday, and by Wednesday, we'll see clear skies and cooler temperatures, with highs in the upper 60's. High tide will peak at about 10 this morning, and low tide will occur around 4:15 this afternoon. For Breakfast this morning, Chef Marc is preparing a short stack of decadent s'mores pancakes, with chocolate chips and marshmallows, along with a side of our crispy applewood smoked bacon for only $6.95. For lunch today, Marc is featuring a massive "baconator" burger - 8oz of succulent ground beef infused with chipoltle peppers, chunks of bacon, and topped with sauteed onions and Boursin cheese, along with a side of crispy french fries for just $9.95. You can also order all of our regular menu items at [1]www.maritimetogo.com, and those items will be ready by the time you arrive. We've now posted our Thanksgiving Order Forms - everything from the "whole shebang" - our premier Thanksgiving Dinner, to individual fresh free range turkeys, hams, fresh oysters, and a wide assortment of sides, pies, and much more. Oven space is limited, and we sell out each year well before Thanksgiving week, so please order early by clicking [2]www.maritimemarketbhi.com/thanksgiving.aspx. The Market will be open on Thanksgiving Day from 8am - Noon, and your orders will be ready for pick-up by 11am. We've also posted the registration page for The Market's next Side Porch Oyster Roast - taking place on Saturday, Nov. 25, so go to [3]www.maritimemarketbhi.com/oyster-roast.aspx to reserve your seats. The evening features an incredible spread of Chef Marc's seafood goodness including steamed oysters, steamed old bay shrimp, pulled pork barbecue, smoked whole chickens, and a host of your favorite sides and other goodies. It's our most popular Side Porch event of the year, and now with the full facilities of our new Forest Pavilion, you'll enjoy a beautiful autumn evening by the fire pits & tiki torches with your island friends and family. For libations, we'll have beer & wine by the glass, or you can step into the Market and pick up your favorite six-pack or bottle of wine and bring it out to your table. Register early, as this event will sell out well before Thanksgiving week. Municipal elections will take place on Tuesday, November 7. Andy Sayre is running unopposed for his third term as Mayor, and there is a contested election this year for the other Village Council seat. Both of the candidates for the contested seat - James (Jim) Bonica and Elizabeth (Betsi) Stephen, will participate in a "meet & greet" taking place tomorrow afternoon at the BHI Club from 3:30 - 5pm. All islanders are encouraged to attend and get to know the candidates and their positions on island issues. Nicole Mohler and Josie Moll are organizing the island's Trick-or-Treat maps this year. Trick-or-treating will take place on Saturday, October 28, from 2pm - 6pm, and the maps will highlight the island's homes and businesses open to trick-or-treaters. If you are on the island on Saturday, October 28, and would like your home listed on the trick-or-treating map, or if you are a business owner and would like to open your business to trick-or-treaters, please send a quick note to Nicole at [4]nicole.mohler@yahoo.com, and copy Josie Moll - josie@sweetbaycatering.com. Nicole and Josie will need your physical address, and any other specifics (such as the time you'll be at home). Maps and home listings will then be posted on-line, or printed and available for pick-up at the Market. The next Island-wide Litter Sweep will take place on Saturday, October 28. Meet at the Fire Station at 11am and choose your Wynd or beach area to clean, with gloves, trash bags and grabbers provided. Snacks are available, and prizes are awarded for the most unusual item found, and Community Service certificates are available for hours volunteered. The Public Safety Auxiliary will hold its annual Chili Supper at the Fire Station on Saturday, October 28, from 5-8pm. Proceeds raised through the PSA will benefit the Public Safety Department. The BHI Club will be celebrating Halloween on Saturday, October 28. The day begins with a pumpkin-carving contest, and wraps up with the Trail of Terror - an annual rite of passage that takes place on Hole No. 5 of the golf course, with parking on Stede Bonnet Wynd. The Trail of Terror begins at 7pm, and features live actors, strobe lights, fog machines and othe spooky surprises along the trail. There are snacks & hot chocolate for the young-uns, and a cash bar with beer & wine for the grown-ups :) The next Howl at the Moon Sunset/Moonrise Party will take place on Friday, November 3, and we're moving the event back to Access 39, as fires are not allowed at Access 42. We'll gather from 5:30 -7:30 at Access 39, and we'll have the bonfire blazing! Chef Marc will be bringing a huge pot of soup, and Peter (the piper) will be playing the ancient Celtic melodies on the bagpipes. BYOB and bring an appetizer to share. The sun will set at 6:17pm, and the full golden moon will rise from the depths of the Atlantic at precisely 6:21pm. The BHI Conservancy is publishing a photo book of Bald Head Island, and they're hosting a photo contest for inclusion in the book. [5]Click Here for more information, or call the Conservancy at [6]910-457-0089. The 2017 Southern Living Idea House on Bald Head Island is open for public tours on weekends through October. A portion of all house tour ticket sales benefit the Old Baldy Foundation. Tickets can be purchased online at [7]www.IdeaHouseBHI.com. The community of Bald Head Islanders dug deep into their pockets recently, donating over $20,000 for hurricane Harvey relief in Texas, and before we could take a breath, two new monster storms - Irma and Maria - ripped the hearts out of our favorite Carribean islands. Now (and with thanks to Dick Johnston, Andrea Pitera and many other islanders), the BHI community is once again reaching out to assist, in an "island to island" effort to help our friends in the BVI's (British Virgin Islands). Island to Island is raising money through a raffle of your favorite BHI activities & events, and will send 100% of the proceeds from this to “BVI Community Support Appeal.” (go to [8]https://www.virgin.com/unite/bvi-community-support-appeal ). BVI Community Support Appeal was created to raise money for the long term reconstruction of the BVI's; and to fund, support and work with local partners on the ground. They are a not-for-profit organization and their entire overhead is subsidized by the Virgin Group and Richard Branson, so 100% of what we raise for them goes to help the islanders. Please join BHI to help the BVIs by purchasing raffle tickets for the amazing donated prizes below. The first prize winner gets to pick their prize from all the prizes, second place gets to pick from all the remaining prizes and so on with each winner until the last place winner takes home whatever prize remains. Go to [9]https://rafflecreator.com/pages/17853/island-to-island-winners-choice -raffle to see the current prizes and to purchase tickets. If you'd like to donate additional prizes to be raffled, please contact Andrea Pitera at [10]andrea.pitera@me.com . Don't forget to follow us on our various social media platforms. Saturday Specials at the Maritime Market - 10/21

Good morning Fellow Islanders! It's 59 degrees on the front porch this morning, with dead calm winds and the sounds of the South Beach surf roaring through the dewey air. I've been looking for shooting stars this morning - the Orionid meteor shower is peaking now, but if you're an early bird and missed this morning's show, get up before dawn tomorrow and you should be able to see about 20 meteors per hour through our crystal clear morning skies. As the dawn breaks, we'll see sunny and clear skies again today, with temperatures rising to the mid 70's, with a light northeasterly breeze and no rain in the forecast. We'll cool to the mid-60's overnight, and warm to the mid 70's again tomorrow with mostly sunny skies and easterly winds. Clouds will begin to roll in on Monday afternoon, and we hope to see some much-needed rain on Tuesday, with cooler temperatures following on Wednesday and through next weekend. High will peak at about 9:15 this morning, and low tide will occur around 3:30 this afternoon. For Breakfast this morning, Chef Marc is preparing a short stack of decadent s'mores pancakes, with chocolate chips and marshmallows, along with a side of our crispy applewood smoked bacon for only $6.95. The BHI Club's Member-Guest wraps up today with the final rounds this morning, followed by a "position" round, with the flight winners advancing to the championship shootout taking place around 3pm. If you're on the island, drop by and watch your fellow islanders battle it out - just look for a mass of golf carts near Holes 16 & 17 - or wherever the beverage cart is parked :) Municipal elections will take place on Tuesday, November 7. Thursday Specials at the Maritime Market - 10/19

Good morning Fellow Islanders! It's 60 degrees on the front porch this morning, with a flutter of a breeze and a crystal-clear sky revealing an incredible display of morning stars. The north wind has a calming effect on South Beach - laying down the surf, and flatening the seas. The crickets must be in hibernation, and the early birds remain in slumber, thus the only sounds are those of the rustling palms nearby. As the dawn breaks, look for a beautiful autumn day with loads of sunshine and temperatures reaching the low 70's, along with moderate northeasterly breezes becoming lighter as the day wears on. We'll cool to the low 60's overnight, and warm to the low 70's again tomorrow, with lighter breezes and no chance of rain. High will peak at about 8 this morning, and low tide will occur around 2 this afternoon. For Breakfast this morning, Chef Marc is preparing a hearty huevos rancheros - a flour tortilla layered with chili & eggs - topped with cheddar & salsa, and only $6.95. For lunch today, Marc is featuring our famous taco salad with all the trimmings for just $8.95. Thursday's hot bar theme is "Mexican"! The BHI Club's Member-Guest tourney tees off this morning, with a full field of nearly 100 golfers! Kevin and I will be carrying the banner for the Market, and conditions couldn't be more perfect for a terrific weekend of golf :). The BHI Club is hosting a Fashion Show tonight, with cash bar cocktails beginning at 5pm and the show starting at 6pm. There's no charge to attend the show, and you'll see clothing from Island Passage, along with Jewelry from All About Art. The fun continues at All About Art on Friday, as they host a Trunk Show featuring mimosas and Uno e 50 jewelry at 11am. Municipal elections will take place on Tuesday, November 7. Andy Sayre is running unopposed for his third term as Mayor, and there is a contested election this year for the other Village Council seat. Both of the candidates for the contested seat - James (Jim) Bonica and Elizabeth (Betsi) Stephen, will participate in a moderated candidate forum taking place this coming Monday at the BHI Club from 3:30 - 5pm. All islanders are encouraged to attend the forum and get to know the candidates and their positions on island issues. Now (and with thanks to Dick Johnston, Andrea Pitera and many other islanders), the BHI community is once again reaching out to assist, in an "island to island" effort to help our friends in the BVI's (British Virgin Islands). Island to Island is raising money through a raffle of your favorite BHI activities & events, and will send 100% of the proceeds from this to “BVI Community Support Appeal.” (go to [7]https://www.virgin.com/unite/bvi-community-support-appeal ). Monday Specials at the Maritime Market - 10/16

Good morning Fellow Islanders! It's 75 degrees on the front porch this morning, with a light breeze coming off of the water, and the sounds of the South Beach surf echoing through the dunes. The pre-dawn skies are clear & starry, with a crescent moon rising on the eastern horizon. As the dawn breaks, look for mostly sunny skies in the morning, with increasing clouds this afternoon in advance of a cold front moving over the island later this evening. Temperatures will hold steady in the mid 70's until dusk, and then drop rapidly through the evening, bottoming out in the low 50's before dawn, with gusty winds a chance of showers or thunderstorms beginning late this afernoon and through the evening (we could use the rain, as our lagoons are about two feet below normal). We'll wake tomorrow to a beautiful autumn day, with crisp, cool & clear skies warming to the upper 60's, with gusty winds persisting through the day. Ditto for Wednesday, with the winds abating on Thursday and through the coming weekend, with no rain in the forecast. Low tide will occur around 11:30 this morning, and high tide will peak at about 6 this afternoon.
