Saturday Specials at the Maritime Market - 8/19

Good morning Fellow Islanders! It's 83 degrees on the front porch this morning, and the wee hours are now completely dark, with the days growng noticeably shorter since the summer solstice 2 months ago. Crickets and the sounds of the surf dominate the melodies at this hour, and the morning stars twinkle on and off. Dawn's twilight will soon peek over the horizon, washing away the stars with the coming brilliance of the sunrise, and so begins another day in paradise :) Today we'll see partly sunny skies, with temperatures climbing to the upper 80's, and the heat index breaking 100 again. Gusty winds will provide some relief, as would a summer shower - should one wander by. The forecast is reasonably consistent over the next several days, with partly sunny skies and a chance of a summer shower each day through at least Thursday. Low tide will occur around 11 this morning, and high tide will peak at about 5:30 this afternoon. For Breakfast this morning, Chef Marc is preparing a short stack of bacon maple pancakes, with a side of crispy hash browns for just $6.95. For lunch today, Marc is featuing a decadent lobster & brie pizza, topped with arugula and served by the slice, along with other gourmet pizza selections. You can also order all of our regular menu items at [1]w[2]ww.maritimetogo.com, and those items will be ready by the time you arrive. A rare total eclipse of the sun will move across the United States this coming Monday, in a narrow ban that begins in Oregon, and ends in Charleston, SC. However, we will experience a 97.5% eclipse, and it will become dark for a brief period of time. The Market is teaming up with Bald Head Island Limited Real Estate Sales in hosting a special Howl event from 1:30 - 3:30pm at Beach Access 42. The Market will also CLOSE from 1:30pm - 3:30pm on Monday so our employees can experience this once-in-a-lifetime event. Check your in-boxes (or your spam folder) from yesterday - we sent out a detailed note about Monday's event with logistics and other information. The BHI Club's First Friday Fire Pit returns on Friday, Sept. 1, with complimentary appetizers and live music on the Palms Terrace. Friday Specials at the Maritime Market - 8/18

Fellow Islanders, The entire country will be "eclipse-crazy" over the next few days, and traffic jams are predicted on all roads leading to or near the path of totality. Fortunately, most of us are already on the island (or hopefully on the way soon) to experience this phenomenon in one of nature's most pristine and magnificent places on Earth :) In preparation for the big event, here are some logistics for Monday: A) The Market will CLOSE from 1:30pm - 3pm on Monday so our employees will have the opportunity of experiencing this once-in-a-lifetime event (ok - maybe twice in a lifetime for some of us :). Please arrive early (hopefully before 1pm) to gather any goodies you wish for the event, and to allow our staff to shut the place down and get to the beach in time. B) We will gather at Beach Access 42 for a mid-day "Howl", but without the bonfire or bagpipes. The Market will be bringing original Moon Pies, along with bottles of Sun Drop soda, and a few appetizers that chef Marc will create. Bald Head Island Limited Real Estate Sales will be bringing a specially designed t-shirt for attendees, but supplies will be limited. In addition, BYOB and bring an appetizer to share with the crowd. C) The eclipse will begin around 1:30pm, with the darkest time being at about 2:30pm, before returning to full light at about 3:30pm. Be sure to park completely off the streets to allow access for Public Safety Vehicles, and please observe an "no parking" signs in the area - there are a few, and Public Safety will be issuing tickets for careless or irresponsible parking. D) Being a mid-day event, prepare as if you're spending the afternoon at the beach - in addition to your favorite beverages, bring plenty of water, sunscreen, or other protective clothing. E) Regarding "approved viewing glasses", Amazon has caused quite a stir by allowing knock-offs and other unapproved viewing glasses to be sold through their website, and we received a note from them stating that the glasses we purchased may not conform to the NASA specifications. They issued a full refund for the purchase. However, the glasses are properly tagged with ISO numbers, along with the approved manufacturer's information, and our research indicates that these glasses may in fact be just fine. However, in an abundance of caution, we will not be selling these glasses. We will give a pair of glasses to anyone who is willing to sign a waiver, and those individuals will assume full responsibility. We only have about 200 pair, so they will go quickly, and we will limit each signature to a maximum of four (4) pairs. There are other safe methods of viewing the eclipse, so please click[1] [2]https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/projection to explore other options. It is very important to communicate to your family the dangers of looking at a solar eclipse with a naked eye - and wearing regular sunglasses does not reduce the dangers of severe eye damage or even blindness. F) Weatherwise, we'll see a typical summer day, with partly sunny skies and a slight chance of a summer shower or thunderstorm. The cloud cover, if any, could prevent direct-viewing of the eclipse, but the skies will still get very dark (about 97.5% totality for our location). G) Lastly, when leaving the beach, please gather up your own trash and dispose of properly, and drive safely to your home. There's no hurry, you're on Turtle Time :) The Market will reopen on Monday at 3pm or shortly thereafter. Be safe, and have fun! Enjoy this wonderful day on the island with your friends & family, and we'll see you 'round the Market! Friday Specials at the Maritime Market - 8/18

Good morning Fellow Islanders! It's 83 degrees on the front porch this morning, with a warm & steady breeze coming off the water, and the twilight revealing a mostly clear sky with a few scattered clouds. The crescent moon is rising in the east, chased by the brilliance of Venus just below. The South Beach surf is robust, but the island is otherwise quiet and very peaceful. Today we'll see partly sunny skies, with a moderate southwesterly breeze and temperatures climbing to the upper 80's again, while the summertime humidity pushes the heat indexes to over 100. There's only a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm today, but a better chance tomorrow. Ditto for the days ahead, with no relief in the forecast as of yet. The forecast for Monday's Solar Eclipse continues to show a partly sunny day with a slight chance of showers. The cloud cover could hamper viewing of the eclipse, but one thing's for sure - it will get dark at about 2:30, and we'll be at Access 42 to celebrate the event :) Low tide will occur around 11 this morning, and high tide will peak at about 5:30 this afternoon. For Breakfast this morning, Chef Marc is preparing "eggs in purgatory" - classic skillet cooked eggs with a spicy tomato sauce, and a side of our crispy applewood smoked bacon for just $6.95. For lunch today, Marc is featuring a grilled Atlantic swordfish with a cilantro lime beurre blanc and a side of jasmine rice for only $10.95. Friday's hot bar theme is "Seafood"! You can also order all of our regular menu items at [1]w[2]ww.maritimetogo.com, and those items will be ready by the time you arrive. We've been informed by Amazon that they've been unsuccessful in verifying that the viewing glasses we purchased are NASA approved. Our own research has revealed that the glasses we purchased have all of the appropriate markings (ISO numbers) and were manufactured by an approved vendor, so we're not quite sure why we received notice from Amazon. Nonetheless, we will not be selling the glasses, but instead will give them to anyone willing to sign a disclaimer (and we are not "holding" glasses in reserve for anyone). If you'd like a pair, we'll have them at the Howl event on Monday. Island Hardware may still have a few pairs for sale as well. It is very important to communicate to your family the dangers of looking at a solar eclipse with a naked eye - and wearing regular sunglasses does not reduce the dangers of severe eye damage or even blindness. Proper viewing techniques must be followed in order to safely view the eclipse. For more information about this eclipse and how to view it safely, go to [3]www.eclipse2017.org. Thursday Specials at the Maritime Market - 8/17

Good morning Fellow Islanders! It's 81 degrees on the front porch this morning, with dead calm winds, and a few clouds revealed by the early twilight of dawn. The air is thick & fragrant with the scents of the sea, with the only sounds being those of the nearby crickets and the faint splash of surf from the flat South Beach surf. Today we'll see an unusually warm & muggy day, with partly sunny skies, light southerly breezes, and temperatures climbing to about 90, with heat indexes over 100. If you're heading to the beach or the golf course, take plenty of water with you, you'll need it. As hurricane season kicks into high gear, we're watching the NWS site every day, and two more tropical waves (91L and 92L) appear poised to ramp up, and perhaps merge to form a cyclone within the next couple of days. Stay tuned :) The early forecast for Monday's Solar Eclipse is showing a partly sunny day with a slight chance of showers, so we're not yet sure how much we'll see, but one thing's for sure - it will get dark at about 2:30, and we'll be at Access 42 to celebrate the event :) Low tide will occur around 10 this morning, and high tide will peak at about 4:30 this afternoon. For Breakfast this morning, Chef Marc is featuring our famous French Toast, with a side of country ham for just $6.95. So sign up by visiting [8]www.bhic.org/fishing-school/, but hurry - this school will likely sell out within the next week or so. Don't forget to follow us on our various social media platforms. Josie Moll is posting more events, store specials and pictures, so [9]follow us on Facebook, [10]Twitter and [11]Instagram . In addition, young Claude is very active on Social media with over 7,000 followers on [12]Instagram, and posts many items related to [13]Bald Head Blues[14] and island living on Instagram and [15]Facebook. Enjoy this wonderful day on the island with your friends & family, and we'll see you 'round the Market! Weekly Specials at the Maritime Market - 8/16

Good morning Fellow Islanders! It's 80 degrees on the front porch this morning, and the island is still, dark & very quiet, with calm winds, flat seas, and mostly starry skies, with a few wispy clouds moving slowly from the west, and a crescent moon rising in the east. As the dawn breaks, look for a warm & sticky summer day, with partly sunny skies, light breezes, and a slight chance of a summer shower later this afternoon. Ditto through the coming weekend, with little change in temperature, humidity or potential rainfall. Low tide will occur around 9 this morning, and high tide will peak at about 3:30 this afternoon. For Breakfast this morning, Chef Marc is preparing a short stack of the ultimate "s'mores pancakes", with chocolate & marshmallow, and a side of our applewood smoked bacon for just $6.95. For lunch today, Marc is featuring prawn dumplings with Thai noodles, and also Kung Pao chicken (spicy) over jasmine rice. Wednesday's hot bar theme is "Asian"! You can also order all of our regular menu items at [1]w[2]ww.maritimetogo.com, and those items will be ready by the time you arrive. Our island lost another fine gentleman this weekend when Win Stevens passed away. Win was passionate about golf, and worked in the golf industry as the Director of Advertising for Golf Digest magazine before retiring to BHI. He was very active in the BHI Club, serving on the board for six years, and overseeing the course renovation. Most of his time was dedicated to raising his grandson Tyler as his own, coaching little league, attending ball games, and seeing him through boarding school and on to college. Win had a great many friends and was very close to his family, and his sudden loss reminds us of the fragility of life itself. Our heartfelt prayers and condolences go out to Fran and all of the Stevens clan. I'll post details of his memorial services as they become available. A Memorial Service for Brooks Powell will take place this Thursday at the Village Chapel at 11am, followed by a Covered Dish reception at the BHA. For those wanting to bring a dish, please contact FA McLeod at faatbeach@aol.com to coordinate items. Also, please let FA know if you can stick around for a few minutes after the reception to help clean up. [3]Brooks' Obituary is now published in the Southport Pilot. In lieu of flowers, Brooks asked that donations be made to the Bald Head Island Public Safety Auxiliary, PO Box 3009, BHI, NC 28461, or to Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, 107 W. Main Street, Danville, VA 24541. There are only 10 seats remaining for The Shoals Club's fabulous Wine Dinner this Thursday evening, featuring the wines of the Antinori family of Italy! This incredible evening will begin with the Marchese Antinori Cuvee Royal, and move through courses pairing with the 2015 Tenuda Guado al tasso Vermentino and the 2014 Castello Della Sala "Cervaro della Sala", along with the 2012 Pian delle Vigne Brunello di montalcino, and the world class 2014 Tignanello. The cost is $120++ per person, with a 50% cancellation fee for no shows within 24 hours. For reservations, please call the Shoals Club at 910-454-4888. The evening is reserved for those 21 and older only. A rare total eclipse of the sun will move across the United States on Monday, August 21, in a narrow ban that begins in Oregon, and ends in Charleston, SC. The eclipse will occur around 2:30pm, and Bald Head Island is just barely outside the "total eclipse" band. However, we will experience a 97.5% eclipse, and it will become very dark for a brief period of time. The Market is teaming up with Bald Head Island Limited Real Estate Sales in hosting a special Howl event from 1:30 - 3:30pm at Beach Access 42. We've been informed by Amazon that they've been unsuccessful in verifying that the viewing glasses we purchased are NASA approved. We're doing our own research as well, but as of today, we will NOT be selling these glasses. It is very important to communicate to your family the dangers of looking at a solar eclipse with a naked eye - and wearing sunglasses does not reduce the dangers of severe eye damage or even blindness. Proper viewing techniques must be followed in order to safely view the eclipse. For more information about this eclipse and how to view it safely, go to [4]www.eclipse2017.org. BYOB and bring an appetizer to share. It may be a bit warm, so bring protection from the sun (hats, sunscreen, etc.)? Tuesday Specials at the Maritime Market - 8/15

Good morning Fellow Islanders! It's 81 degrees on the front porch this morning, with scattered stars sharing the sky with a few clouds, while a warm & sticky breeze moves over the dunes. As the dawn breaks, look for a partly sunny day, as temperatures climb to the mid 80's, with a light southwesterly breeze and a slim chance of any shower. Hurricane Gert will no doubt kick up some good surfing waves as she moves north, but she could also cause a strong rip current as well, so be careful in the water. And, with the combination of heat & humidity, be sure to drink plenty of fluids as well while you're out & about. Low tide will occur around 7:45 this morning, and high tide will peak at about 2:15 this afternoon. For Breakfast this morning, Chef Marc is preparing a delicious sun-dried tomato & asparaus omelette, with a side of our crispy applewood smoked bacon for just $7.95. For lunch today, Marc is presenting an authentic veal saltimbocca over pasta for only $10.95. Tuesday's hot bar theme is "Italian"! Monday Specials at the Maritime Market - 8/14

Good morning Fellow Islanders! It's 80 degrees on the front porch this morning, and I'm thrilled to see a few stars in the sky after a week of mostly overcast morning skies. The waning last quarter moon is shining high in the sky, and a light breeze is washing over the dunes. As the dawn breaks, look for a mostly sunny and humid day, with patchy clouds and a very light southerly breeze coming off the water. A slight chance of a summer shower will lurk in the background, but nothing to interrupt plans for tee times or excursions on the water. There's a better chance of showers tomorrow, but otherwise another gorgeous summer day. Our old friend "99L" now has a name - Tropical Storm Gert, and she's shooting the gap between NC and Bermuda, to little fanfare or annoyance. Low tide will occur soon, around 6:45 this morning. High tide will occur at about 1 this afternoon, and low tide returns around 7:45 this evening. For Breakfast this morning, Chef Marc is preparing our famous Belgian waffles, topped with mixed berries and served with country ham for just $7.95. For lunch today, Marc is preparing a free range wild boar burger on a brioche bun and topped with boursin cheese and caramelized onions, and served with a side of crispy french fries for only $9.95. You'll also see Louisiana fried chicken with a "kick" on the hot bar. Monday's hot bar theme is "home cookin"! You can also order all of our regular menu items at [1]w[2]ww.maritimetogo.com, and those items will be ready by the time you arrive. I'll post details of his memorial services as they become available. Delphina and Riverside Adventures will host their weekly Sunset Celebration tonight, beginning at 5:30 in front of Riverside Adventures with DJ Fray, face painting, a hula hoop contest, and more. The party then moves over to West Beach (Access 5) and continues 'till sunset with a bonfire and free s'mores for the kids. The event is generously sponsored by Bald Head Island Limited Real Estate Sales. Monday nights are also "half price appetizer nights" at the Shoals Club for full members, and the fun takes place on the veranda at Latitudes overlooking the Cape, with live music and the best views on the island. Apple classes continue this Tuesday morning at 9 at the BHI Club’s Green Room, and this week’s topic is iMovies on the Mac. Fishing season is just around the corner, and there's no better way to prepare than to participate in the BHI Conservancy's annual Thad Wester Fishing School! This year's school takes place the last weekend in September (9/29-9/30). After years of conflicting calendars, I finally attended this school a few years ago, and oh what fun! If you're going to have a home here (or if you visit often), then you need to learn how to fish. We're surrounded by water, and the fishing is pristine. So sign up by visiting [11]www.bhic.org/fishing-school/, but hurry - this school will likely sell out within the next week or so. Don't forget to follow us on our various social media platforms.
