Tuesday Specials at the Maritime Market - 4/25

Good Morning Fellow Islanders! It's 65 degrees on the front porch this morning, with a cool breeze coming off the water and a loud surf joining the birds in nature's morning songfest. The skies are clear - for now - revealing the morning stars, but those will quickly be washed away by the dawn, or hidden by the cloud cover - predicted again to overwhelm the island this morning. The radar signature looks eerily like a hurricane, with a huge eye, and a perimeter of squalls that could circle back on us from the west, but the whole mass is slowly drifting to the north, and it appears that our chance of continued rain is diminished significantly as the day wears on. Skies should clear for good overnight, leaving us with a beautiful spring week ahead, and through the coming weekend, with sunny skies, and temperatures in the mid 70's through Monday. High tide will peak at about 7:15 this morning. Low tide will occur around 1:30 this afternoon, and high tide returns at about 7:45 this evening. For breakfast this morning, Chef Marc is featuring our delicious pecan Belgian waffles, topped with whipped cream, and served with a side of our crispy applewood smoked bacon for only $5.95. For lunch today, Marc is preparing a hearty toasted Italian sub, with melted provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, and a balsamic vinaigrette, along with a side of our house made chips for just $9.95. Tuesday's hot bar theme is "Italian"! You can also order all of our regular menu items at [1]w[2]ww.maritimetogo.com, and those items will be ready by the time you arrive. Your humble writer and his lovely bride will be skedaddling to the North Carolina mountains next Monday for a few days before the summer season fully kicks in, and we're pleased to announce that Bonny McLain will be our guest-writer for the daily & weekly emails next week :) Bonny last took a turn at guest-writing the email back in 2012 and did a fabulous job. She'll be on the island as well, so you can trust her "on location" observations and insights. Dr. Audra Rickman from Four Paws Animal Hospital will be visiting the island and seeing patients at the Fire Station tomorrow from 8:30am - 1pm. Please call 910-457-7387 to make an appointment. The next installment of the Conservancy's Lecture Series takes place tomorrow night at the BHI Club. The Lecture is titled "Nocturnal Visitors", and is presented by Emily Hardin and explores BHI's history of Sea Turtles. The evening begins with a cash bar at 5:30pm, followed by the lecture at 6pm, and dinner at 7pm. The cost of the prix fixe dinner (Chicken Marsala, garlic mashed potatoes, green beans & strawberry shortcake) is only $14.95 plust tax/gratuity. Dinner is optional, and guests may choose to attend only the lecture. Either way, you must RSVP by the end of day tomorrow by calling the club at 910-457-7300. The 10th Anniversary of BHI's Wounded Warrior Family weekend will take place this weekend! The island community will host five Purple Heart recipients and their families & caregivers, with activities throughout the weekend. The event is hosted in partnership with the Halo for Freedom Warrior Foundation (a 501-C-3 non-profit organization), and 100% of donations go toward the cost of hosting this event and supporting the families. The main event for islanders is the Community Event at the BHI Club from 3-6pm on Friday. The afternoon includes parachute jumps (weather permitting), a bounce house for kids, and Dana Bowman jumping in with a giant American Flag at 4pm. Music is provided by the Red, White & Bluegrass Band, and a community buffet is available for all who attend. The event also features some very special guest speakers. Donations are needed to help fund this special weekend, so please make checks payable to Halo for Freedom Foundation, and please write "BHI Weekend" in the Memo field. Then, please mail or drop your check to the Bald Head Association, PO Box 3030, Bald Head Island, NC 28461. Chad Paul, CEO of Bald Head Island Limited, will be in Raleigh next Tuesday, May 2 to make a detailed presentation regarding the new Ferry Transportation Authority contemplated by NC Senate Bill 391. If you're a property owner (or you'd like to be an owner one day :) and have been unable to attend similar presentations on the island, this is a great opportunity to get caught up on this issue. In short, the bill - if passed and signed by the Governor - would create the Bald Head Island Ferry Transportation Authority - which would then issue bonds to acquire the assets of Bald Head Island Transportation, Inc. including the Deep Point terminal, the docks on both sides, ferries, trams, barge and parking facilities, and the new Authority would also operate the ferry system. The presentation will take place at 6pm in the Brooks Pierce & Co. conference rooms A-C, located downtown on the 17th floor of the Wells Fargo Tower, 150 Fayetteville Street. If you'd like to attend, please contact Joyce Fulton via email at jfulton@bhisland.com. Don't forget to follow us on our various social media platforms. Monday Specials at the Maritime Market - 4/24

Good Morning Fellow Islanders! It's 69 degrees on the front porch this morning, with a chorus of birds and a starry morning sky quickly washing away from the dawn's twilight. The air is still, the surf is loud, and the entire scene is surreal, when compared to our forecast. The NWS is calling for a day of showers, thunderstorms, and gusty winds - none of which showed up yesterday as predicted (sans the early morning shower). Our little island has a long track record of missing many of these stormy events. A quick peek at the radar shows a mass of unsettled air to the southeast - and to the west, with a sliver of clear skies in-between, and that's where we sit at present. Nonetheless, skies should turn overcast by later this morning, and buckets of rain are in the forecast, along with those gusty winds. Temperatures will inch up just a little by the afternoon. Skies will gradually clear through the day tomorrow, and by Wednesday, we'll see clear & sunny skies with spring-like weather through the coming weekend, with no additional rain in the forecast. High tide is peeking now (around 6:30). Low tide will occur around 12:30 this afternoon, and high tide returns at about 6:45 this evening. For breakfast this morning, Chef Marc is featuring a delicious sausage, egg & cheese croissant with a side of roasted potatoes for only $5.95. For lunch today, Marc is preparing a hearty hot roast beef sandwich with smoked gouda on a pretzel roll, with a side of our house made chips for just $9.95. Monday's hot bar theme is "Asian"! You can also order all of our regular menu items at [1]w[2]ww.maritimetogo.com, and those items will be ready by the time you arrive. The next Community Pot Luck Supper will take place tonight at 6pm at the BHA. Bring an entree, side dish or dessert, along with your favorite beverage, and meet some of the locals! It's the last Community Pot Luck supper until the fall. For more information, contact FA McLeod at faatbeach@aol.com. Dr. Audra Rickman from Four Paws Animal Hospital will be visiting the island and seeing patients at the Fire Station this coming Wednesday from 8:30am - 1pm. Please call 910-457-7387 to make an appointment. The next installment of the Conservancy's Lecture Series takes place this Wednesday at the BHI Club. The Pirate Invasion takes place the weekend of June 23-25, and the weekend is sponsored by many of the island's businesses and homeowners, and coordinated by BHI Pirate Invasion, Inc - an organization formed by Sandy Kades to faciliate bringing the Pirates back to the island. For those who recall the Pirate invasions of the past, this weekend will be very familiar, with a sea battle, sword fights, ghost walks, a pancake breakfast, and special interactive and educational events all weekend. Sandy is in need of volunteers to help orchestrate the weekend and to help house the pirates! Also, donations are greatly appreciated to help off-set the costs of travel & housing. We have a blustery spring day ahead, with mostly sunny skies and a persistent southwesterly breeze gusting to the mid 20mph range. The winds will die down overnight, as temperatures drop back to the upper 60's. Tomorrow, look for mostly cloudy skies with a decent chance of a spring shower, particularly in the afternoon. Unsettled air will simmer over the island through Sunday night and all day on Monday, with scattered showers & possible thunderstorms through early Tuesday. Skies will clear out by Noon on Tuesday, leaving us with a beautiful spring week through next weekend. Low tide will occur around 10:45 this morning, and high tide will peak just after 5 this afternoon.
