Monday Specials at the Maritime Market - 6/26

Good morning Fellow Islanders! It's 74 degrees on the front porch this morning, with dead calm winds and a quiet island still in slumber. The breaking dawn is revealing patches of blue, with hues of pink, purple, and orange reflecting from the scattered clouds. The seas and the surf are quiet, and the critters are singing in multi-part harmonies. We have a beautiful week ahead! Our stifling humidity of late has already abated, and will continue to drop, bottoming out on Wednesday before inching back up toward the coming weekend. Meanwhile, skies will be mostly sunny, with winds from the north and temperatures peaking at about 80. A slight chance of a shower remains on the official forecast, but vaporizes by Wednesday. High tide will peak around 10:15 this morning, and low tide will occur around 4:15 this afternoon. For Breakfast this morning, Chef Marc is preparing a hearty house made barbecue hash, topped with two eggs over medium and drizzled with hollandaise. It's a mountain of food for just $9.95. For lunch today, Marc is presenting our famous shrimp & grits - made with local caught shrimp, and served with bacon chips for only $9.95. Also, look for braised country collards and chicken gumbo on the line, as it's "home cookin" day :) You can also order all of our regular menu items at [1]w[2]ww.maritimetogo.com, and those items will be ready by the time you arrive. Delphina and Riverside Adventures will host their weekly Sunset Celebration tonight beginning at 5:30 in front of Riverside Adventures with DJ Fray, face painting, a hula hoop contest, and more. The party then moves over to West Beach (Access 5) and continues 'till sunset with a bonfire and free s'mores for the kids. The event is generously sponsored by Bald Head Island Limited Real Estate Sales. Monday's are "half price appetizer night" at the Shoals Club for full members, and the fun takes place on the veranda at Latitudes overlooking the Cape, with live music and the best views on the island. The Village of BHI's Public Safety Department is hosting their first Public Safety Day tomorrow from 10am - 3pm at the new Village Park at the Marina. It's a family event, and the Public Safety folks, along with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Brunswick Sheriff's dept. will be showing off much of their equipment including fire trucks, ATV's, patrol boats, jet skis, and even a helicopter. Kids will be allowed to climb aboard and discover this fascinating equipment, so come out and meet your Public Safety Staff. Drop by Turtle Central from 4-6pm tomorrow night for Turtle Tuesdays, and enjoy extended shopping hours, special sale events, wine tastings, and live music :) The Conservancy's weekly "Turtle Trot" takes place on Wednesday. These fun runs begin at Turtle Central at 9:30am, with registration beginning at 8:30am, and all proceeds benefit turtle protection efforts. Bald Head Island Limited’s CEO, Chad Paul, will hold an information session in Greensboro, NC on the proposed legislation, Senate Bill 391, and the opportunity to create a Ferry Transportation Authority. Save the Date - the island's first ever "shred" event will now take place on Thursday, July 13! If you have boxes of old records that have been taking up valuable space in your closets, crofters, or garages, then there's no better time to have them safely destroyed, and you don't have to haul them off the island to do it :) The Market and the Village have conspired to put together a shredding event, with the proceeds benefiting the BHI Conservancy. The cost of shredding a standard cardboard file box full of old files is only $10/box, and the shred truck can shred the entire contents - including the staples, paper clips, binder clips, file folders, and the box itself. Sunday Specials at the Maritime Market - 6/25

Good morning Fellow Islanders! It's 80 degrees on the front porch this morning, and the air is dense & fragrant, with the scent of the sea & the sand carried inland by a light breeze coming off the water. The skies are gray & overcast, but that's having little impact on the enthusiasm of the birds - singing away at top pitch, and unmoved by their hueless surroundings. Today we'll see mostly cloudy skies, with light southwesterly breezes, temperatures in the low 80's, and storm cells popping up around us. One or more may get lucky and land on the island, so keep your radar app handy. Our dense & heavy air will abate beginning tomorrow as our weather and wind patterns change, and while a slight chance of rain will remain, we'll see humidity levels begin to drop. On Wednesday, we'll experience a glorious spring-like day again, with abundant sunshine, light breezes, and very low humidity! This relief will last through at least Friday. High tide will peak around 9:15 this morning, and low tide will occur around 3:15 this afternoon. For Breakfast this morning, Chef Marc is featuring a short stack of our famous blueberry pancakes, topped with whipped cream and served with a side of our crispy applewood smoked bacon for only $5.95. For lunch today, Marc is presenting a barbecue plate of our own smoked pulled pork barbecue, with "hog wash", and a side of crispy french fries for just $9.95. You can also order all of our regular menu items at [1]w[2]ww.maritimetogo.com, and those items will be ready by the time you arrive. You could also join the Pirates for a pancake breakfast at Mojo's this morning from 10am - Noon, with music and magic performances and a children's costume contest. $25/adult, $15/child. Peggy Cleary will be teaching classes at All About Art today from 10:00 to 5:00. Call 910-368-5336 for more information. And next door at 6D Merchants Row, Antique Maps & More is now open. The store features framed maps and charts of Bald Head Island and the surrounding areas, along with antique maps dating back to 1613, so drop by and peruse these treasures. Saturday Specials at the Maritime Market - 6/24

Good morning Fellow Islanders! It's a balmy 80 degrees on the front porch this morning, with blustery winds, a roaring surf, and an overcast sky. A few brave birds have taken to the skies - singing their morning songs - but most remain hunkered in their nests. They'll be out soon enough - as will the island's humanity - biking, beach combing, and chasing breakfast. Today we'll see partly sunny skies, with persistent southwesterly breezes and a high in the mid 80's, but feeling more like the mid 90's with our high humidity. We're likely to see a few overnight showers after midnight, and lingering through the morning hours tomorrow before tapering off in the afternoon. We'll get a welcome break on Monday as our humidity levels drop considerably, leaving us with beautiful spring-like weather for much of the coming week. High tide will peak around 8:15 this morning. Low tide will occur around 2:30 this afternoon. For Breakfast this morning, Chef Marc is featuring our famous breakfast pizza! It's layered with sausage gravy, scrambled eggs, sauteed onions, and cheddar cheese, and slices are only $4.95. Today's hot bar theme is "gourmet pizza"! You can also order all of our regular menu items at [1]w[2]ww.maritimetogo.com, and those items will be ready by the time you arrive. Friday Specials at the Maritime Market - 6/23

Good morning Fellow Islanders! It's 79 degrees on the front porch this morning, with overcast skies and a roaring South Beach surf. A light breeze is coming off the water, and the songbirds are filling the air with beautiful music. Today we'll see partly sunny skies, with gusty southwesterly breezes and a high in the mid 80's. Ditto for Saturday, with a chance of a late afternoon or evening shower. The winds will lay down a bit on Sunday, but the chance of a summer shower will linger through Tuesday, with temperatures and humidity moderating a little. High tide will peak around 7:30 this morning. Low tide will occur around 1:30 this afternoon, and high tide returns at about 8 this evening. For Breakfast this morning, Chef Marc is preparing our delicious Belgian waffles, topped with fresh summer strawberries and whipped cream, and served with a side of our crispy applewood smoked bacon for only $5.95. For lunch today, Marc is featuring several seafood specials - staring with fried Florida gator bites - pounded tender and served with a spicy tropical sauce for just 8.95. Marc is also featuring a decadent crabcake made with local blue crab claw meat - served solo or as a sandwich on a brioche bun for just $10.95, or a fried Oak Island flounder sandwich - also only $10.95. Today's hot bar theme is "Seafood"! You can also order all of our regular menu items at [1]w[2]ww.maritimetogo.com, and those items will be ready by the time you arrive. We spent the better part of yesterday erecting our new 30' x 50' tent on the new Forest Pavilion. It's a sturdy structure that will give cover to the elements for events and other gatherings, and will remain up for the next few weeks. The Forest Pavilion makes a terrific venue for your next event :) For inquiries, please contact Josie Moll, our Events Manager, at [3]josie@sweetbaycatering.com. I'll be on the golf course with my partner this weekend playing in the BHI Club's Member-Member golf tournament! It's one of my favorite events of the year, and I love the format. If you couldn't get your stars in alignment to play this year, you need to put this one on your calendar for next year, and make it happen :) After the golf, we'll be back at the Market hosting a wine tasting this afternoon from 4-6pm, with special guest Katie Murphy of Alexander Valley Vineyards. Katie is staying on the island (a guest of a local), and has agreed to drop by and present a few of their outstanding wines. We'll gather at the Forest Pavilion and will feature the Alexander Valley Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sin Zin, Homestead Red blend, and Cyrus, along with a few light appetizers prepared by Chef Marc. Pirate Weekend kicks off today! The Sea Battle thunders away at Beach Access 5 from 5:30-6pm, followed by a Party with the Pirates at Delphina from 6-10pm, with live music by the Rusty Cutlass band. There's also Ghost Walks, and more music at the Wisp, so drop by and bring the kiddies. The Annual Island Treasures Yard Sale will take place tomorrow at the BHA from 9am - 3pm. If you'd like to reserve a table to sell your own wares, please contact Geri Monty at geraldine.monty@gmail.com. The Village Public Works Department will haul away any remaining items and deliver them to a local charity. If you're looking for bargains, then this is the place to be! Bald Head Island Limited’s CEO, Chad Paul, will hold an information session in Greensboro, NC on the proposed legislation, Senate Bill 391, and the opportunity to create a Ferry Transportation Authority. The Greensboro information session will be held on Thursday, June 29, at 6:30 PM in the Brooks, Pierce Conference Room, located at 2000 Renaissance Plaza, 230 N. Elm Street, with many thanks to Mark Prak for the use of his Greensboro offices. If you'd like to attend, Please contact Joyce Fulton at [6]jfulton@bhisland.com and let her know (there are special access instructions to the building). You'll find parking in the deck behind the Renaissance Plaza (accessible off Elm Street). Alternate parking is available in the Bellemeade Parking Deck, located directly across North Elm Street from the Renaissance Plaza. It's time to pick up your Conservancy Picnic tickets! This year's picnic takes place on Sunday, July 2 at the Cape Fear Common from 4-8pm, with all your favorite activities including music, beer, a live and silent auction, and a great spread of picnic fare. Tickets are on sale daily in front of the Market - along with raffle tickets to win a new golf cart. You can also purchase tickets at Turtle Central. It's also time to register your cart for the annual July 4th Golf Cart parade! Register your cart on-line at [7]www.oldbaldy.org. This year's themes are Patriotic, Tacky Tourist, and Anything BHI. Line-up begins at 9am at the new Village Harbour Park (the old tent site), and the parade begins at 10am on the 4th. So - you have just a couple of weeks to dig through your archives and pull out the obsolete records. Set them aside, and then load up your cart and bring them up to the new Village Park at the Harbor on July 13 between 9am & noon. You'll see the shred truck parked in the circle. Make your checks payable to the BHI Conservancy for a minimum of $10/box (but feel free to add a little more for a donation :). Any individual, business, or non-profit is welcome to bring their old records, and the cost is the same for all - $10/box. Don't forget to follow us on our various social media platforms. Thursday Specials at the Maritime Market - 6/22

Good morning Fellow Islanders! It's 77 degrees on the front porch this morning, and the breaking dawn is revealing a few high clouds. The dunes are full of birdsongs, with a light breeze coming off the water and and roar of the South Beach surf riding on the wind. Today we'll see partly sunny skies, with light southerly breezes and a high in the low 80's. We'll drop to the upper 70's overnight, and warm to the mid 80's tomorrow, with fewer clouds, and more persistent southwesterly breezes. For the weekend, we'll see much the same, with more unsettled air moving in Saturday evening and bringing a better chance of spotty showers or storms. High tide will peak soon - around 6:30 this morning. Low tide will occur around 12:30 this afternoon, and high tide will peak at about 7 this evening. For Breakfast this morning, Chef Marc is preparing Huevos Rancheros, with a side of our creamy slow-cooked stone-ground grits for only $6.95. Katie will be on the island (a guest of a local), and has agreed to drop by and present a few of their outstanding wines. Weekly Specials at the Maritime Market - 6/21

Good morning Fellow Islanders! It's 77 degrees on the front porch this morning, and the dense pre-dawn air is damp & fragrant with the scents of the sea and the wet sand, with a light breeze rustling in the nearby palms and a few early birds peeking out from their nests - checking the skies before taking flight and breaking into song. We'll continue to see a bit of unsettled conditions on this first official day of summer, with overcast skies and temperatures inching towards 80, along with light southerly breezes and a diminishing chance of rain as the day wears on. The chance of rain will linger, yo-yo-ing and wreaking havoc on those wanting to head down but not understanding our micro-climate. For the ininitiated, all published forecasts (except for mine:) will paint a gloomier picture of the weather than what actually takes place. It's a long story, but what you'll likely see here are long periods of sunshine and gorgeous beach weather, puncuated by brief showers, downpours, or even a thunderstorm. Sometimes the "puncuation" is merely a threat on the horizon - missing us by mere miles, or only brushing one end of the island. We tend to repel bad weather, yet we get to see it all around us. It's quite fascinating, but don't let it keep you from coming - you'll still have plenty of beach or golf time. And - lastly, when those showers do hit their mark, there's nothing more fun than driving your golf cart through a large puddle and splashing everyone on board - you'll feel like a kid all over again :) Low tide will occur around 11:45 this morning, and high tide will peak at about 6 this evening. For Breakfast this morning, Chef Marc is preparing a summer solstice celebration of light, with a pacific rim omelette stuffed with a beef stir-fry, pineapple & cheddar cheese for just $6.95. For lunch today, Marc is featuring a savory plate of braised duck wings with lo mein & a vegetable medley for only $9.95. Today's hot bar theme is "Asian", and you'll see a delicious polynesian shrimp-fried rice on the line today. You can also order all of our regular menu items at [1]w[2]ww.maritimetogo.com, and those items will be ready by the time you arrive. Betsy Nelson is back for the season, and the weekday art classes are in full swing at All About Art. The Conservancy's weekly "Turtle Trot" takes place this morning. Tonight is "free corkage" nights for members of the Bald Head Island Club. Bring your own bottle of wine and pay no corkage fees! If you need help in selecting a nice bottle, drop by the Market anytime - we have some terrific selections! The BHI Club's Member-Member golf tournament kicks off with the Champions' Dinner tomorrow evening, followed by the tournament rounds on Friday, Saturday & Sunday. It's one of my favorite tournaments of the year, and I love the format, so pick a partner and call Justin at the Pro shop to register. Also in golf, look for Grayson Murray in the field this week at the PGA Tour's Traveler's Championship in Connecticut, while Chase Parker and Chris Worrell both tee it up at the Web.com Tour's Lincoln Land Charity Classic in Springfield, IL. All of our players will be looking to make the cut and play on the weekend, and you can watch highlights and tournament coverage on the Golf Channel, and on CBS. Just look for the Bald Head Blues golf cart and surf board logo on our performance polos, and you'll see our guys :) The Market is thrilled to host a wine tasting this Friday from 4-6pm, with special guest Katie Murphy of Alexander Valley Vineyards. Tuesday Specials at the Maritime Market - 6/20

Good morning Fellow Islanders! It's 79 degrees on the front porch this morning, and the breaking dawn is revealaing overcast skies, with light breezes and the roar of the South Beach surf echoing through the dunes. Our island's micro-climate has sheilded us from most of the thunderstorm activitiy swirling around us. Today may be different, as the forecast is calling for a 70% chance of showers or storms. Some of these cells are spinning off of a tropical wave located in the Gulf of Mexico - which may gain a little steam and become a tropical storm before heading north across Louisiana and into the heartland. While no threat to us, those outer bands could drift in our direction over the next couple of days. Look for continued unsettled skies with warm days and persistent southwesterly breezes, and keep your radar app handy :) Low tide will occur around 10:45 this morning, and high tide will peak at about 5 this afternoon. For Breakfast this morning, Chef Marc is preparing a short stack of decadent bourbon bacon pancakes wtih a side of our slow-cooked yellow stone-ground grits for only $6.95. For lunch today, Marc is featuring a ravioli carbonara & vegetable medley for just $9.95. You'll also find a delicious grilled marinated chicken puttanesca with a parmesan polenta - also for $9.95. Today's hot bar theme is "Italian'"! You can also order all of our regular menu items at [1]w[2]ww.maritimetogo.com, and those items will be ready by the time you arrive. We had a terrific time at Latitudes last night - braving the winds of Cape Fear with some dear friends and enjoying the terrific appetizers (made even better by being half-priced :) The music, food, and fellowship were outstanding, and we'll definitely be making this a part of our routine this season. Larry Caringer and his wife Mabel have recently become full-time residents of our little island paradise. In his previous life, Larry worked for Apple Computer, and with Apple's devices becoming more ubiquitous, Larry has offered to hold a few classes and teach us how to take full advance of the incredible technology in our hands. Starting today, Larry is conducting iPhone, Mac and iPad classes at the Club, beginning at 9am, and they'll meet every other Tuesday (except for July 4 - meets on Monday 3rd). Classes are $50 each. To register, or for more information about the classes and subjects covered, please drop Larry a note at larry_caringer@mac.com. Classes are designed for all ages, so drop by the Gallery for more information, or call 910-368-5336, or email allaboutartbhi@gmail.com. Register your cart on-line at [6]www.oldbaldy.org. This year's themes are Patriotic, Tacky Tourist, and Anything BHI. Line-up begins at 9am at the new Village Harbour Park (the old tent site), and the parade begins at 10am on the 4th.
